The newbie flag is a special attribute set on any newly created characters. It is set regardless of whether or not you have already created characters, and does not take into account how long your previous characters have spent online.
This flag will allow and disallow your character from doing certain things, and is intended to help newbies who may otherwise face difficulty in the wild world they are tasked with traveling through.
It can be disabled at any time from within the main options menu of the game, which can be accessed by pressing alt+o.
The flag will make sure your character is effectively safe. It will stop you from dying, and you will be protected from crafting accidents and suicide.
You can not enter some areas or do certain things as a newbie.
While you are a newbie, your pk (player killing) flag can not be turned on.
After a time playing the game, the flag will be turned off by itself, and will not be able to be gained again on any existing characters.
