When fighting animals, there are a few things to remember.
First, know how the animal you are fighting behaves. Rabbits for example will run away if hit, so you need to kill them in one shot.
Second, pay attention to if you have been knocked down by an animal or not. Some animals can cause you to fall over, and when that happens you need to press r as fast as possible to stand back up. It is imperative that you know as much information about how the animal attacks as you can gather; some animal attacks can be deadly if not avoided.
It can sometimes help to track the animal you are fighting, although it is not always necessary. If you are not tracking the animal, make sure you can hear it.
