Combat is a fairly large aspect of stw. Whether you are hunting for food, or maybe killing players, you will need to know how to use all of the tools at your disposal.
Some of the most useful things to use when fighting are the lock indicators and tracking. See the category on the tracking system for more details.
You should also know what weapon you are using. If it is a melee weapon, it is good to know how many times you need to press down arrow or a certain letter to access it in your inventory so you can draw it quickly. If it is a ranged weapon, you also need to know how to get to your ammo quickly.
By pressing the grav accent key (sometimes known as back quote) while focused on a weapon or ammo in your inventory, you can hear what type of damage it does. Certain NPC's are resistant and vulnerable to different types of damage, so you can pick out the best weapon for the job.
