Currently, the only items that you can carry on your person that do not appear in your bag are clothes. To wear clothing, simply draw it from your inventory and press space. The item will no longer appear in your bag.
To remove clothing, press control i from the main game screen to bring up a list of everything you are currently wearing. Press enter on an item to remove it, and it will appear right back in your bag.
